我一个小孩，戚建华家孩子虽多，他还有一个哥哥跟一个姐姐，不过哥哥上高中了，姐姐已经高中毕业，在丝厂做事，所以他在家里也没人一块儿玩。
那是一九七七年的夏天。放暑假头一天，吃完午饭我就跑到了戚建华家去。本想在他家院子里玩，可他说还是出去，因为他姐姐生了病，正在家静养，何况现在是睡午觉的时候。
戚建华家的北边是一大片桑田。夏天的时候，桑叶长得极为茂盛，桑椹也结得多。我们玩累了，就各自拣了株大桑树，睡在一个大枝丫上摘桑椹吃。因为有点累，所以想先打个盹，再想想有什么好玩的。大概是在下午一点钟左右，我正想提议再往北边的水田里捉青蛙去，戚建华突然说：“有人来了，”
小孩子摘桑椹吃根本不算什么，不过对于农人来说，孩子把桑叶糟践了更让他们心疼，所以被农人看到我们摘桑椹吃多半会被骂。好在我们是在桑田中间，桑叶把人都遮得严严实实，又是坐在桑树上，我们可以看到外面，可从外面却看不进来。所以也没害怕。现在不是摘桑叶的时候，那人过来多半只是察看一眼而已，很快就会走的，只要不吱声，就不会挨骂。我们都是这样想的，所以尽管有点小声音外面那人也听不到，但我们还是连大气都不敢出。
那个人走近了。从桑叶的缝隙闻看出去，我们看见那是个叫化子，我松了口气，正想说没事，戚建华突然极小声地说：“别说话！”
那个叫化子站在戚建华家院子的围墙外，向四周看了看。这副模样实在很古怪，我也有点奇怪。难道这叫化子是想翻到戚建华家去偷东西？可是这叫化子看了看四周，却并没有翻墙，只是沿着围墙开始走。不过，他走路的姿势非常奇怪，一脚踏上一步，另一脚拖上来，就像是个瘸子。可是这叫化子刚才走过来时，分明不是跛腿，他像是在跳一种诡异的舞，只是不太好看。
他到底在干什么？我们都觉得奇怪，同时又感到有些害怕。
这个叫化子走了几步，停在了一棵树下。这是棵楝树，正结了许多圆圆的楝树子。他弯下腰，在树根处挖了一下，这才转身走了。等到不见了那个叫化子的人影，我们才走出来。走到楝树下，那个叫化子把泥土捋平了，不注意根本看不出痕迹。我们在那里挖了挖，发现地下埋了一颗楝树子。
只不过，这颗楝树子是粉红色的，而且硬得跟石头一样。
楝树子老了后会变成黑色，但从来没见过有红色的。这件事透着诡异，我们把这颗红色的楝树子砸碎后，却发现里面的核竟然是一个软软的黑色水泡，有一根细细的小尾巴，似乎还会动，也不知到底是什么东西，而且腥气非常重，后来这地方好几天都有苍蝇爬着。
第二天再去找戚建华玩，他家里请了个乡间的老中医正在给他姐姐看病，戚建华跟我说，他姐姐前几天一直昏迷不醒，昨天晚上突然清醒过来，大大地呕了一阵，人精神多了。他说起来时脸色还有点发白，我问他到底是怎么回事，一开始他不肯说，后来才说，他姐姐呕出来的竟是许多和那颗楝树子里的核样子差不多的东西，软趴趴的一坨，也一样会动。
那老中医也说不出这到底是什么病，好在戚建华的姐姐呕吐后就渐渐好起来了。
又过了几天，突然传戚建华姐姐那个厂里有个男青工死在了一个桥洞下，死状非常怪。虽然觉得害怕，但我和戚建华因为好奇也跑去看。好在小镇够小，我们跑去时尸首刚被捞起来，搁在桥边，身上盖了一张破席，周围围了很多看热闹的人。
听说那个男青工家境不错，还跟戚建华的姐姐谈过对象，不过已经吹了，也不知是不是因为这事而自杀。我和戚建华从未见过死人，心痒痒地想看，又怕。这时有人突然叫着说席子动了，我们看去，果然发现这破席子下有东西在动。有个胆大的找了根长树枝挑起席子的一角，露出死人的一条手臂，结果看的人有一半都吐了起来。这条手臂苍白得毫无血色，而上面就跟蜂窝一样尽是一个个小洞，每个小洞里都有一只小小的蛤蟆，而且都是活的。后来听说这人身上全是这样，当时看了手臂没吐的那些人，其实先前都已经吐过了。我和戚建华都想起了那个叫化子，但因为害怕，所以一直都没和别人说。
再次说起这件事，是十几年过去，我离开那个小镇上大学后，跟寝室里的同学夜谈时了，只是没说红色楝树子的事。
那同学是湘西人，他一听就说，这是他们那边故老相传的赤血蛊。赤血蛊又叫五毒蛊，人中了蛊，血液里就会生出蛤蟆、蜈蚣、蝎子、蛇、蜘蛛这五毒。如果不得解救，开始身上奇痒无比，然后身上会起一个个包，最后五毒就会咬破皮肤钻出来，让人死得惨不忍睹。不过下蛊是极秘密的事，一旦被人看破，所下的蛊就要反噬主人。这件事分明是那个死者找人来给戚建华的姐姐下了蛊，但法术不知被什么高人所破，结果作法自毙。
我听了后心有余悸，也不敢再提了。
现在与戚建华一家失去联系已经几十年，不知他们家后来怎么样，会不会遭那术士报复。
