走着走着，忽然一阵风袭来，把马灯给吹灭了，“见鬼！”老庄心里暗暗道，“为何早不来晚不来，偏偏这时候来风？难道是鬼弄的？哼，我才不怕呢！”老庄蹲下身子，用棉衣围着马灯，重新划了火柴，将马灯点燃，可刚一起身，马灯又被风吹灭了，如此点了几次，均告失败。
老庄担心火柴不够用，索性不点了，心想，等这阵风过去再点吧。
老庄就那么站着，无意中抬头往山梁上看了一眼，妈呀，这一下子头都大了，因为他分明看到山梁上隐隐约约有个人影，头大如瓮，一动不动，直直地站在那里，似乎正盯着自己，老庄心里有点发毛了，低下头寻思着怎么办？正迟疑间，忽然那大头鬼发出“呜”地一声沉闷声，紧接着一把沙子当头撒了下来，这一下大出乎老庄意外，老庄听说过鬼撒沙的传说，知道一旦被鬼撒中了沙子就基本上阳寿要尽了，于是急忙掉转身来，跌跌撞撞、屁滚尿流似地一口气跑回了家，一进门便栽倒在地，手里还仅仅攥着那盏灭着的马灯。
老庄病倒了，这一病就是半月，饭也吃不下，只能勉强进点牛奶或汤汁之类液体食物。老庄四肢无力地躺在床上等死，也不敢跟家里人提及遇鬼的事。“我到底得罪谁了这么倒霉？”他想不通，想不明。终于有一天，他想到了一个人——村西的赵老爷子！
这赵老爷子去世不到两年，那天老庄站立之处正好离老赵坟地不远，老庄和老赵曾经有过一次摩擦，那是十年前的事，有一回老庄去自家水田放水，路过老赵家水田的时候，他看到老赵家下的鱼篓子，出于好奇，他想看看鱼篓子里篓住多少鱼，也没想偷，可老庄一不小心滑了一跤，把人家鱼篓子给压坏了，为此两家吵了起来，之后村委会给调解了，两家也和好如初了，都过了这么长时间，怎么现在还来翻旧账、找麻烦、取我命？何况这也不算什么大事啊。
