刘只有一个儿子，是做木材生意的大老板，可儿子对老刘不孝顺，已有好几年没回家看望他了。
最近一段日子，老刘觉得身体越来越差，没几天就卧病在床，起不来了。老刘给儿子打电话，让他回来看看，可儿子只回了句“生意太忙，走不开”就匆匆挂了电话。再打，却无人接听了。
两天后，老刘简直连呼吸的力气都没了，这时屋门忽然开了，一个人走了进来。
老刘一喜，却发现来者并非儿子，而是一个陌生的瘦高个老汉。瘦老汉一见老刘的样子，便大声惊叫道：“老伙计，才几天不见，你咋就病成这个样子了？”
老刘糊涂了，说：“你认错人了吧？我不认识你啊。”瘦老汉不接这茬，自顾自又是做饭又是买药地忙了起来。
吃了饭、喝了药，老刘稍微有了点精神，他不想白白享受，于是不好意思地说：“老哥，恕我记性差，实在想不起咱们有什么交情，麻烦你提个醒？”
瘦老汉笑道：“真是贵人多忘事。你不记得我，我可一直记得你这个大恩人，你对我的救命之恩我一刻也没敢忘！”
老刘也不好再说什么，这瘦老汉很健谈，没多久，两人便像老朋友一样无话不说了。老刘说起自己生病、儿子不孝，悲从中来，流下泪水。瘦老汉气愤得直跺脚，叹道：“枉你一生为善，却不幸生了这等儿子，真是可悲！”
从那以后，瘦老汉天天都来照料老刘，不过半月，老刘便痊愈了。老刘感激涕零，连连拜谢，瘦老汉却不以为然：“比起你的救命之恩，我为你做的这点事算啥？放心吧，我接下来还要找到你儿子，让他无论如何也要担负起赡养你的责任。”
老刘叹了口气：“唉，他眼里只有钱，哪还容得下我这个爹？”
瘦老汉脾气很倔，说去还真的转身就走。老刘直摇头，暗想这人真怪，也没问我儿子住在哪里就去，怕是连人都找不到，还谈什么劝他回心转意呢？
一连数天，老刘再也没见到瘦老汉的影子，心中正疑惑，这时儿子却回家了。老刘又惊又喜，难道真是瘦老汉在中间起了作用？
儿子还带来了两个工人，他一见老刘就连声嘘寒问暖，又颇为自责地说：“爸，一听您病重我都急死了，恨不得长双翅膀飞回来。现在看您平安无事，我总算放心了。”
这天晚上，老刘被一阵声音吵醒，出门一看，见儿子正指挥那两个工人锯院里的大槐树。老刘吃惊地问儿子：“你半夜不睡觉，跑来锯树干啥？”
儿子说有个客户向他订了一批槐木，可他手上的木料还差一点，而家里这棵老槐树枝干粗壮，拿它顶数，可解燃眉之急。儿子赔着笑说：“我怕您舍不得，只好先斩后奏了。您也知道现在生意难做，这次就当是帮我吧？”
老刘围着槐树转了一圈，心里很不是滋味：这棵树是在他五岁那年父亲种下的，如今已屹立了七十来个春秋。近几年来，老刘耐不得寂寞，常常来到树下说些心里话，不觉间，已将槐树当成可以倾诉心声的伙伴。他有点舍不得，但也不想为了一棵树而影响到父子感情，只好勉强说：“锯吧，应该能卖个好价钱。”
第二天，儿子一早就说生意忙，要马上赶回去。他掏出两千块钱递给老刘，说：“爸，我不能常陪在您身边，这点钱您留着用吧。”
老刘高兴地接过钱，他都记不清上次儿子给他钱是多少年前的事了，看来儿子这回真是转性了。儿子大声招呼两个工人，让他们把锯断的两截槐树拖上货车，可任凭他们如何用力，愣是连一截槐树也拖不动。儿子气得大骂“废物”，也上前助力，可合三人之力仍是不行。
老刘看了说：“看来这树太重了，你们把它再锯一次吧。”
老槐树的树干十分坚韧，两个工人忙到天黑，总算把树锯成四段。显然今天他们是走不成了。两个工人直喊辛苦，老刘的儿子没办法，只好说带他们去附近的小酒馆里慰劳一下。
他们几个人刚走，许久不见的瘦老汉来了。他面容憔悴了很多，头上、胳膊上还打着绷带，看样子是受了伤。老刘见了甚感心疼，忙问：“老伙计，出了什么事？你怎么伤得这么重？”
瘦老汉尴尬地笑笑，若无其事地说：“前几天不小心摔了一跤，如今基本好利索了。我听说你儿子回来了，就想过来问问他对你还好吗？”
老刘笑着说：“儿子比以前强多了，他关心我的身体，还留了两千块钱呢。”
瘦老汉突然脸色大变，怒道：“只有两千？简直禽兽不如！”说完这话，他愤愤地摔门而去。看着他的背影，老刘直犯疑：他这唱的又是哪一出？儿子给我两千块钱，怎么就禽兽不如了呢？
