故事发生在上世纪六十年代末。一大早，县公安局刑警队接到报警—二副食被盗了。“二副食”就是鹿鸣县第二副食商店。李广副大队长带着两个手下赶到了现场。商店经理说，初步发现少了两木箱饼干和部分糖块。
这个案子很蹊跷。窗子上，去年冬季糊窗缝的纸还严实地贴着，钢筋防护窗十分坚固，墙壁和天棚都没有破损。门是用铁皮完全包严的两扇对开的板门，中间并排着四个手指粗的铁鼻子，门闩是一根大号的铁棍子，一头是焊死的回弯圆柄，另一头有个眼儿，由一把大锁锁着。
